Quicktime Technical Background

What is it?

QuickTime and QuickTimeVR are a cross-platform standard. QTVR allows extremely high-quality, photographed or rendered 3D objects to be played back in real-time on home computers. QTVR technology allows computer users to easily create and view either a panorama from a 360-degree perspective or an object from all sides. QTVR is especially useful in generating computer visuals for such fields as travel, education, architecture, sales, manufacturing, real estate and art.

Benefits:

Works on both PC Windows 95/98/NT/2000 and Macintosh computers. Plays music, MIDI, video, QTVRs in a standard compression format. Can be used both on CD and direct on the Web.

QTVR-scenes

In a QTVR scene a numbers of photos are taken to comprise 360 degrees in the horizontal plane, (normally 12 to 36 pictures.)

The photographs are then stitched together and saved in a format where the viewer is in the middle of the scene.

The viewer can freely pan around look upward/downward, and zoom in and out. Scenes can be linked together so the viewer can walk through many scenes.

When the VR Panorama appears, place your mouse in the middle of the image and left click (Windows) or just click (MacOS) and move the mouse gently left, right, up or down. Note that the farther to the right or left you move the mouse, the faster the scene moves. You can also zoom in or out by pressing the control or option keys on a Macintosh or shift or control on a PC.

What is Java?
Java is a powerful web-centric programming language used in many applets and applications, from web graphics to enterprise database solutions. Virtual Properties offers a Java based VR Panorama browser . The Java applet will work with Netscape 3.x or Internet Explorer 3.x web browsers. The Java viewer does NOT require any additional plugins - which is great. The only downside is that currently, the VR image quality is not as good as the Quicktime player or plug-in version. You can learn more about Java here.
